Winter Bike Service: What It Includes, When to Book, and Why It Matters
A pre-winter bike service is the single most cost-effective thing you can do for your bike before the weather turns. Our workshop team explains what is included, what gets damaged first, and why October is the best time to book.
What Does a Pre-Winter Bike Service Include? A pre-winter service at The Bike Zone workshop in Lisburn covers the full mechanical inspection and adjustment your bike needs before it faces months of rain, salt, and cold temperatures. The core checks include: brake inspection and adjustment (pads, cables, hydraulic fluid level if applicable), drivetrain cleaning and lubrication (chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs), gear indexing, bearing inspection (headset, bottom bracket, wheel hubs), tyre condition and pressure, and a full safety check. For bikes with suspension, we also check fork lowers and shock seals. Why Does Winter Cause More Bike Damage Than Summer? Three factors make winter significantly harder on bike components than summer: road salt , sustained moisture, and temperature cycling. Road salt is the most damaging — it accelerates corrosion on metal components at a rate that can render a chain or cassette unserviceable within a single winter if the bike is not maintained.
